February is Black History Month and I’ve joined the Black History Month Blog Hop. We started with a giveaway and there’s still a day left. I’m giving away The Hemingses of Monticello by Annette Gordon-Reed: Black History Month Giveaway Hop. Check out the many other bloggers participating in the giveaway with the list at Reflections of a Bookaholic. The second event of the blog hop was to make note of events. I compiled a list of activities in my area: Selected Black History Month Events around Kirkwood, Missouri. Other bloggers have made their own posts, some featuring internet events, Black History Month Blog Hop: Around Town.

I finished The Art of Eating In months ago, but finally got my review up for Weekend Cooking last week: Book Review: The Art of Eating In by Cathy Erway. I finished No-Fad Diet, the American Heart Association’s latest take on weight loss, and plan to cook something from it this week so it will be a good Weekend Cooking post.

Reading

I have an unusual quantity of books going at the moment. American Terroir by Rowan Jacobsen is really fun. Along with No-Fad Diet, I’m also looking at You on a Diet by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz and The Philosopher’s Diet by Richard Watson — that last one is very different from the other two.

cover of An Appetite for Murder by Lucy BurdetteI’m reading An Appetite for Murder by Lucy Burdette because a friend of mine is on a month’s art sabbatical in Key West and this book seemed a way to vicariously travel with her.

I’ve also started Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes which was the pick for the African American Read-In that is being hosted Vasilly (1330V), Doret (The Happy Nappy Bookseller) and Edi (CrazyQuiltEdi). There’s still plenty of time to pick up a copy and join us — discussion starts February 22.

Will Read

If I get American Terroir finished this week, I’ll probably try either A Year in the Village of Eternity by Tracey Lawson or Farm City by Novella Carpenter for my lunch time reading. My next fiction fun read will probably be Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann.
